Northern Hesse becomes a model region for adaptation to climate
change!
The Federal Ministry of Education
and Research (BMBF) funded a research project on climate change,
involving about 20 partners, coordinated by the University of
Kassel in order to develop and study adaptation strategies to the
expected climatic changes in Northern Hesse. The KLIMZUG-Northern
Hesse network aims to identify regional and urban vulnerabilities
in the sectors of natural resources as agriculture, forestry and
water-management.
The Department of Grassland
Science and Renewable Plant Resources develops adaptation
strategies for cropping systems to enable an environmental and
productive agriculture. In the research project such strategies are
investigated exemplarily in catchment area and flood plain of
rivers. The catchment areas of arable sites are covered, as regards
the ground water and soil conservation (keywords pollutant
discharge and erosion). For these sites energetic cropping systems
are investigated in regard to crop yield and various environmental
parameters. In the flood plains of rivers, grasslands are
investigated as appropriate vegetation to ensure water and soil
conservation functions.
The results are used in a further
focus of the development of model scenarios for catchment areas and
flood plains of the North Hessian Fulda in the context of
regionalized climate change scenarios. The derived scenarios will
allow the applicability to other regions.
